Western Kentuckessee Team Invitational

What is the Western Kentuckessee Team Invitational?

The Western Kentuckesee Team Invitational (WKTI) is a team chess tournament for adult and community chess clubs in Western Kentucky and Western Tennessee. Clubs send teams of four players. The tournament is a team-paired swiss, meaning that teams get paired against each other. The Board 1's of each team play each other, followed by the Board 2's, and so on. Each game is worth one point, and the team that scores the most points in a match scores the match point.

The goal is to host this event every year in Western Kentucky or Western Tennessee, so that players in such areas have the opportunity to play in such a high quality tournament without having to travel too far.

History

The inaugural WKTI was on April 22, 2023 hosted in the Oakley Applied Science Building on the Murray State University campus. David Sye, faculty advisor for the Murray State University chess club, came up with the idea of the tournament after there were several tournaments where players from Paducah, Murray, and Jackson (TN) made an effort to travel over an hour to play in tournaments. Sye frequently played in the US Amateur Team North, and thought the Team vs Team format would make for a quality event for the smaller clubs and towns across Western Kentucky and Western Tennessee.
